Book Review: The Leader's Compass

A Personal Leadership Philosophy Is Your Key to Success (2nd Edition)

This was a quick read told in a story about a rapidly growing organization, their journey to excellence, and the role that mentors play in the building of people, specifically Leadership.  The story's main characters are Guy, a 29 year old Marketer from Penn State, and Stanley, a retired Naval Officer that is a good friend and neighbor to Guy.  The new leader was 'sort of' put in charge after an acquisition with a new large scale and ill-defined project.  With this acquisition are new team members who are trying to fit in the organization with no information from the boss.

Stanley takes his young friend through the Leadership Development process where Guy learns about dealing with people, different management styles, and customer satisfaction.  Guy develops a Personal Leadership Philosophy that is designed to define and communicate his style to the team and to himself.  As with typical military leadership, this is highly mission focused, but with the understanding that anything could fall into the mission category and "increasing shareholder value" is certainly a mission we strive to achieve knowing there are several ways to get there.

I like the story narrative format that lays out specific learning by associating it with people and the results. The book ends with some worksheets and tools that can be used to help you develop your own Personal Leadership Philosophy.  The writers, Ed Ruggero and Dennis F. Haley, are former West Point and Annapolis graduates that both served in the U.S. Military and currently operate Academy Leadership and are active on the speaking circuit.
